How did we get here?  In 2002, Jennifer Brown, Founder and CEO of PeopleTactics, decided to make her move.  The rest is history…

 

How did you get to be a HR expert for small businesses?

Many people have asked me this question, and it’s one that I had to think about, as it wasn’t exactly the path I had set out on originally. In January 2002, I decided to leave my high-paying Human Resources position in a Fortune 500 company. This was a position I had been working towards since a very young age. When I was five years old, I decided that I wanted to be a “business woman.” My parents had their own appraisal business and worked out of our basement, so I think this may have been what set me on this path. Everything I had done professionally up to this point had been focused on a senior executive HR career path in a big company. However, in the wake of 9/11 and with two small children, my goals had shifted. I knew I still wanted to work, but wanted to do it on my terms and with more flexibility.

So in June 2002, I left my position and in December 2002, I had my first client—a small business! Throughout the years of my consulting, I started to notice that I was working more and more with small businesses, and I loved it! I truly enjoyed working with small business owners, getting to know them and their businesses, helping them overcome the unique HR challenges they face, and assisting them in establishing their HR practices and avoiding problems that could drain them of their energy and money. My work was incredibly rewarding, as I was making a difference in helping these owners have successful businesses, and it brought me great joy to watch their successes. Therefore, I decided to dedicate my professional life to helping small business owners with their human resources practices through my consulting, mentoring programs, and products.

Since then, I’ve consulted to and mentored many clients and created The PeopleTactics ApproachTM. This approach includes 8 tactics every small business owner needs to establish proven HR practices that will save them time, money, and effort and result in fewer problems, increased profits, and growth.

Who are your clients exactly?

I work with people just like you who are small business owners that neither possess the volume of work nor the cash resources to hire a full-time HR Director, yet they still face the same HR challenges as any large business, in addition to specific HR challenges only small businesses face. I have worked with many clients with diverse businesses, and most likely, I have worked with people in your field. Nonetheless, if I haven’t, you are not at a disadvantage. My specialty is working with business owners to help them implement the HR fundamentals essential to any small business as well as the HR practices that are driven by the state in which you operate; your business goals and objectives; and your company culture.

How are you different from other HR consultants?

I ONLY work with small business owners and their teams. In other words, I don’t consult with people in mid-sized companies or large corporations. What that means to you is that I am very focused on anything and everything that works in terms of human resources for the small business owner. Because my focus is very narrow, what you get with me is no-nonsense, undiluted expertise on what works for small businesses in terms of establishing effective HR practices that allow you to prevent problems, protect your profits, and grow your company.
